Congratulations - Wawanesa Game & Fish!
The Wawanesa Game & Fish is comprised of local outdoor enthusiasts that work towards improving the environmental landscape. This local organization is compiled of some 60 to 70 members of local outdoor enthusiasts that have promoted and lobbied in the area to have additional game seasons instituted. This has not only allowed the residents to enjoy the outdoors harvesting their own food, it has also supplied a boost to the local economy with hunters arriving for the new Elk season. They have a yearly banquet in which they have a head night were you can bring in the antlers from animals harvested that year for judging and a chance to win prizes.
The organization has members that also sit on Conservation District (CD) boards and this allows for information to flow rather freely and makes joint projects run smoothly. The Game & Fish have joined with the CD to perform a bank stabilization project on the Souris River in the Village of Wawanesa. This project was started in the summer of 2010 and after the flood of 2011 the bank that was stabilized is one of the only parts that survived intact. Without the financial help and willingness of the organization and their members to help prepare the site and clean the buildup of trash on the shoreline the project would not have been possible. The flood has postponed the completion of this project and has created some hiccups in the design as washouts have left our plans unusable due to the change in shoreline landscape. We plan to finish the project completely in 2011/12.
The introduction of an Elk season in the area is due to the hard work of lobbying MB Wildlife about the existence of a healthy elk population in the area. A bird refuge has also been created at Skukoom Lake. Shoreline cleanups are conducted by the organization along various streams and rivers in the area. The club lead a clean up on the Souris River bank where the CD is working. The clubs help was greatly appreciated and allowed CD staff to concentrate on design and construction not shoreline cleanup.
The Game & Fish would like to continue to be involved in projects that protect habitat and provide outdoor enthusiasts with accessible areas to enjoy outdoor activities. By researching and lobbying for additional game seasons in the area. Trying to create and improve existing habitat by working with organizations like the Assiniboine Hills Conservation District.
By having some members being involved in the Conservation District the Wawanesa Game & fish was able to access another organization for partnership. This is a great example of how residents involvement and respect for the environment has allowed individuals to join together in order to create a better tomorrow when it comes to conservation of our landscape. The Assiniboine Hills CD is proud to recognize this organization for the part they play in conservation.
